String Quartet #13 in D Minor, K.173 (4th movement)
Saxophone Quartet (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Baritone)
This piece embodies the joy of music. It is characterized by contrapuntal interplay and a degree of chromaticism that was way ahead of its time. I’ve transcribed it for saxophone quartet, note for note, from the Mozart score. All of the lines that were written for string quartet fall beautifully within the ranges and capabilities of the saxophones.
Key Signature: D minor
Time Signature: 4/4
Tempo: ca. 112
Top 1st Tpt Note:
Solos: No jazz
Springboard
Octet (Trumpet, Alto, Tenor, Trombone, Bari, Piano, Bass, Drums)
Springboard was composed for Chet Baker, one of the most important contributors to the creation of the style known as West Coast Jazz. This arrangement draws on the spirit of the “cool” sense of joy that permeated the Los Angeles music scene in the 1950’s. And it still makes you feel good!

Time Signature: 4/4
Tempo: ca. 190
Top 1st Tpt Note: Written A
Solos: Piano, Trumpet, Tenor, Trombone, Alto
Lament
Octet (Trumpet, Alto, Tenor, Trombone, Bari, Piano, Bass, Drums)
*Flugelhorn (playable on trumpet)
Wycliffe Gordon played this arrangement of J. J. Johnson’s jazz standard when he made a guest appearance on a concert performance with my octet. It features the trombone all the way through. A really nice moment for the person who never goes anywhere without slide oil.
Key Signature: F
Time Signature: 4/4
Tempo: ca. 69
Top 1st Tpt Note: Written F-Sharp
Solos: Trombone
Limehouse Blues
Octet (Trumpet, Alto, Tenor, Trombone, Bari, Piano, Bass, Drums)
Two hundred and twenty-four bars of challenging fun! This arrangement is a respectfully modern ‘distortion’ of the 1921 tune that has been a favorite of jazz players for more than nine decades.
Key Signature: E-Flat, D, E-Flat
Time Signature: 4/4
Tempo: ca. 240
Top 1st Tpt Note: Written B-Flat
Solos: Tenor, Alto, Trumpet and Bari
Royal Garden Blues
Octet (Trumpet, Alto, Tenor, Trombone, Bari, Piano, Bass, Drums)
This is a modern arrangement of the revered Dixieland classic by Clarence and Spencer Williams. There are some tip-of-the-hat references to its musical origins, after which a number of elements develop to bring the piece forward on the calendar. Although the chart is basically in 4/4 there are a few interludes that briefly utilize 5/4 and some alternating between 3/4 and 4/4.
Key Signature: E-Flat, A-Flat, B-Flat
Time Signature: Multiple
Tempo: ca. 170
Top 1st Tpt Note: Written C
Solos: Piano and all 5 horns
Salsa Siete
Octet (Trumpet, Alto, Tenor, Trombone, Bari, Piano, Bass, Drums)
A salsa-inspired adventure that utilizes the time signatures of 7/4 and 4/4. After the initial shock induced by the first read-through wears off the group will enjoy the trip and the finished result makes a great impression on audiences.
Key Signature: A-Flat
Time Signature: 7/4 and 4/4
Tempo: ca. 139
Top 1st Tpt Note: Written D
Solos: Tenor (in 4/4), Alto (in 7/4), Trumpet (in 4/4), Bari (in 7/4) and Piano (in 4/4)
You and the Night and the Music
Sax Quintet AATTB
This arrangement for stand-alone saxophone quintet is a scherzetto based on the musically rich standard “You and the Night and the Music”. It moves along briskly from intro to ending, utilizing counterpoint as its main engine. It visits a number of well integrated styles but is fundamentally jazz-oriented. This 2:30 piece will make a great attention-getting opener or encore for your concert.

Tempo: ca. 96 and double-time
